Matthew Perry Astrological Portrait | Neptune Square Sun: Drowning in Loneliness

Thank you for joining me today for a brief astrological chart reading for the late Matthew Perry. According to astro.com, Matthew Perry was born on August 19th, 1969 at 4:47am, in North Adams, Massachusetts. Matthew Perry was a Hollywood actor best known for playing the role of Chandler on the popular sitcom Friends. He passed away on October 28th, 2023 during the partial lunar eclipse in Taurus. This eclipse was conjunct his natal Saturn and opposite his natal moon in Scorpio; and eclipses that aspect Saturn usually bring about karmic endings, or debts having to be paid based for past deeds, and I think his death was activated by this eclipse opposing his natal Saturn in Taurus. So, what I’m going to do today is look at what aspects in his chart indicate the cause of death.

Chart Placements

Matthew Perry chart placements. Note that the Neptune/Sun square is being intercepted by a debilitated moon opposite Saturn. Perry’s addiction challenges may have developed as a coping mechanism to deal with parental alienation.

Planetary Aspects

Matthew has the Sun and Ascendant in Leo at 26 degrees and 10 degrees respectively. His moon is in Scorpio at 7 degrees opposed by Saturn in Taurus at 8 degrees. Neptune is in Scorpio at 29 degrees, which is squaring his Sun in Leo. The Neptune square Sun aspect inclines someone to addictive tendencies to mask deep insecurities and depression, Whitney Houston, Jada Pinkett, Ben Affleck and Bobby Brown also have this aspect. Neptune is the planet of escapism, ego death, oblivion, and release. When you have Neptune making an dissonant aspect to any planet that planet becomes weaker, confused, imbalanced and diffused, which ironically is excellent for entertainers who have to relinquish their ego to bare their souls to their audience by singing, dancing or acting; they have to merge with the spirit of the character they’re playing or the music they’re singing.

But this aspect also makes people self-destructive, sacrificing themselves for their relationships, their jobs, their families, their beliefs or their addictions; a lot of these people use their addictions to connect with god because the vessel of the human body separates them from that Source of unconditional love, peace and acceptance which is what they want more than anything else. These people are incredibly fragile, psychic and empathic. Please with Neptune square their Sun want more than nothing than to merge with something greater than themselves, and when they can’t find a religion, a relationship, or a creative outlet to connect with, they try to sublimate themselves in drugs and alcohol, and this dissolves their ego so that they can forget that they exist. Like Whitney Houston, another Leo, Matthew Perry was a relatively attractive person who destroyed their body with drugs and alcohol, and the body is the primary source of ego identification, it encapsulates the spirit and separates the physical body from higher dimensions of existence, because the body represents the crystallization of energy into physical matter which is facilitated by Saturn.

Neptune: Escapism, Depression, Addictions, Self-Undoing

So Matthew was found dead, and alone in his massive jacuzzi. I do see that he has Neptune in Scorpio in the 4th house of burial and the home; Neptune rules drowning, suicide, and addiction; so Matthew was buried underneath the water in his home, more than likely as a result of his past addictions. The dispositor of his 8th house is in Pisces which is co-ruled by Neptune  and again Neptune is in the house of the home, the family, and the cause of death; Neptune is in the sign of Scorpio which rules the 8th house of death, endings, transformations, betrayal. Perry has his north node in the same house as Chiron opposing the 8th house ruler of Pisces which is Jupiter. Jupiter is in Libra, and the dispositor of Jupiter is in the 12th house of endings, solitude, deep pain, depression and addiction.

Neptune square the Sun has an eclipsing effect on a person’s identity and sense of ego, these people can feel like they don’t really exist or that their existence is meaningless or an inconvenience for others.  Ironically Matthew’s last instagram post looks very Neptunian, he’s in his large jacuzzi at night with the moon looking down on him and there’s a dark purple hue or lighting in the photo, very Neptunian. In the photo you can’t tell who he is, his identity is obscured by the darkness and panoramic shot of this massive pool of water he’s sitting in…the moon and the water are actually the stars in this photo which is all the more ironic with Matthew having his Sun and Ascendant in Leo. Here we can see the diffusing effects of Neptune that can bury the light of the Sun in the fog of addiction, codependency and depression.

Saturn Opposite Moon: Emotional Neglect from Parents

Matthew had Saturn opposite the Moon in Scorpio, the sign of its fall. The moon represents the mother, our emotions, our thoughts, our childhood, and what we need to feel safe. People with Moon opposite, conjunct or square Saturn have a complicated relationship with their mother, they may feel emotionally, mentally or physically detached from their mother, and like Moon in Capricorn children, these natives are usually children of divorce. Moon opposite Saturn can indicate some sort of separation between the mother and father; Matthew also has moon square Ascendant, and Saturn square ascendant…he felt lonely, worthless, and like a burden, so he used Neptune to escape. Neptune is the planet of addictions, drugs, but also acting and performing, this is how he self-soothed, or self-medicated or managed his painful feelings. The drugs, alcohol and acting was a vehicle that Matthew used to escape his deep feelings of depression and loneliness. And Neptune is in the same sign as his moon, but they are in different houses, there’s 12 degrees of separation in between them.

Matthew’s moon is in his 3rd house of communication and thinking, he was deeply affected by his parent’s separation, and he may have blamed himself for their divorce as Saturn is also a planet that causes shame, humiliation, guilt, grief and depression. So Saturn the planet of depression, separation, responsibilities and pain is opposing his moon in the 3rd house of thinking and communication. He didn’t love himself, and he felt like he deserved to suffer because of something that happened to his mother; there’s also a sense of isolation or separation from his siblings, because the 3rd house is also the house of siblings. He experienced profound loneliness, I don’t think he ever married or had children because he had a difficult time connecting to anyone on an emotional level because of how worthless he felt on a cellular level; he didn’t feel like he belonged anywhere or to anyone, so he preferred to be alone to wallow in self-pity and addiction.

In Closing…

The good news is that Matthew is at peace now, he’s shed the mortal coil as they call it and hopefully he realizes that he was never truly alone, that he was beloved by many people and God. It may take a few weeks for him to acclimate to his transition, but ultimately I believe he will find peace.
